SOMOS: Splitboard Mountaineering Film

by | Jan 25, 2023

Spring of 2022 I had the opportunity to join an expedition 250 miles deep in the mountains of Alaska for 26 days. I was hired as the on-slope filmer for SOMOS, a film by Rafa Pease of Connections Movement. The expedition was fully self-sustained once we flew out to the glacier where we were based for the entire trip.

As the on-slope filmer, my role was to capture the athletes as they mountaineered, climbed, and snowboarded down the lines. This meant that I had to do all of the same activities as the athletes, which was both physically and mentally challenging. The terrain was rugged and the conditions were harsh, but the reward was the breathtaking views and the unique perspective that I was able to capture on film. Followed by snowboarding some of the best lines of my life.

In addition to capturing footage of the athletes, I also flew a drone to get aerial shots and did most of the timelapse work. The drones allowed me to get an overview of the entire area and to capture the vastness of the glacier and the surrounding mountains. The timelapse work was also a great way to show the progression of the day and the changes in the light and reveal the Northern Lights 20 or so nights.

The expedition was an unforgettable experience and I am incredibly proud of the work that we accomplished. The final film, SOMOS, is a true testament to the beauty and power of the natural world.
